EP 41: Detox Your Workplace with Melanie Pump

Have you heard about the great resignation happening in the workplace right now? Here’s what Google has to say about this term: The Great Resignation, a term first coined in 2019 by Texas A&M’s Anthony Klotz to predict a mass, voluntary exodus from the workforce, is here, and it’s quite real. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, during the months of April, May, and June 2021, a total of 11.5 million workers quit their jobs.

And it’s definitely not over. One of the reasons I believe that the Great Resignation is happening is that employees are not willing to accept toxic workplaces or places that don’t really align with their values, what they believe they are worth, how they want to work, or where they want to take their careers. And what’s interesting is that employees are not afraid to go and get it. The concept of a toxic workplace may not be new, but I think it’s definitely top of mind.

When I met Melanie Pump and learned that she’s writing a book about detoxing our workplaces, I knew I needed to have her on Brave Women at Work.

In this show, we talk about: • The physical and emotional symptoms of a toxic work environment • What steps we can take to resolve a toxic workplace; spoiler alert, it’s not just a management issue • How toxicity can directly feed into Imposter Syndrome • How COVID-19 has created new toxicity at work and what we can do about it • Melanie’s new book, Detox: Managing Insecurity in the Workplace

Before my conversation with Melanie, I hadn’t given much thought to toxicity in the workplace. Now I see my past work experiences and how we’re moving through this Great Resignation period in an entirely new light!
